Human-Computer Interaction meets Economics: How to Measure Interface Utility

I am a very very new bee in the world of Human Computer Interaction. I found this Google techtalk interesting. Measuring user satisfaction of an user interface is still an open problem in HCI. Here these guys have made a monetary model to measure the user satisfaction.

Think of your job. What does your job offer to you. The list may be like this. Some tasks, enjoyment, challenge, self recognition and wage/salary. So these are the parameters to your overall job satisfaction. So if any parameter among these decreases like if the job is less enjoyable, less challenging then the employer may increase the salaries to keep employes. At the same time we can thin one step back and measure the other parameters than salary during the interview session, with how much salary the job seeker is asking for.

In this talk this job scenario has been used to evaluate multiple user interfaces for a particular task. First make multiple version of user interfaces for a particular task. Ask for real human to do the task with different interfaces, Now calculate the average cost associated with each interface. That will give you an idea about the user satisfaction of your user interface.

Google Visualization for Enterprise

Its been long time I am using Google Visualizations. Within Google Infrastructure its cool and with Google Spreadsheet it just awesome. Just get the URl put the query and bang with your visuals. Simple as it is. If you are in Appengine, Objectify can help you a lot. With objectify you need no more entity to DTO conversion. But Objectify is solely for Appengine. All these are the ways to do Visualization without implementing a custom Data Source. But when you are doing with enterprise that means you are in your private cloud/ hosting blah balh bla, you need to do some nasty stuffs. May be you need to do Entity to DTO conversion and some more extra effort on the client side or convert your legacy data to required response format for Google visualization that may lead to a custom data source implementation. And in this case you need an Introduction to the Data Source Library. Since you are in enterprise most probably you are with JAVA. So in fact you need a Data Source in JAVA I found this very much helpful. It eased using Google VIZ in my office.

I am a new bee in the world of objectify (just entered today). But no doubt this is a cool stuff for app engine. I started with the Objectify version 3.0. I added the jar file using eclipse external JAR file adding mechanism. Right click on the project and see in the build path. On the first hand got this exception

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/googlecode/objectify/ObjectifyService

Cure is you have to copy the objectify jar to your project's WEB-INF/lib folder.
You will readily get rid of this error and encounter another one

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/google/appengine/api/datastore/Async DatastoreService

But here is the cure is not so good. I down graded the version to objectify 2.2.3. And its working now.
But really don't know why..

I got this exception during using hibernet with MySQL. This is a very simple error. Just you need to add the entity class name in persistence.xml file as follows (marked red). In fact most of the IDEs will provide you a GUI for doing this.

I was reading data from the web and there was only date in this format (01/01/2011). So it came to my database with the time part all zeros. But I at least required fake times instead of all zeros. To do that the query in MySQL is as follows

                   update news set news.post_date = TIMESTAMPADD(HOUR,14,news.post_date) where TIME(news.post_date) = TIME("00:00:00");

by the way one more thing, If you are using Hibernet to access your database (As I was doing) dont forget to change the temporal type to TimeStamp. Sample code is as follows

How to set a custom style name in Google Table visualization

I was needed to show hand Icon on each cell of my Table viz. Thats why I was required to set style name for each cell. The Table viz provide a nice and easier way to do this. For JS code you can go to the Documentation.

If you are using GWT then you have to work with the table options. Sample code is as follows

cssClassNames.setTableCell("mouseoverhand");

mouseoverhand is my CSS name here.

Its simple. It happens for the time of the certificate is expired. Solution is just change the date and time of your phone. You may have to do this multiple times. Change the year in a descending fashion one after another if the first one is not working. Even there you can check the validity period of the certificate as well. I was working with JPA, Hibernate and Netbeans. Netbeans automatically generates the entity classes from the database. But the auto generator may confuses with the number type in oracle. Sometimes it generates BigInteger and sometimes BigDecimal. In my case the auto generator made the field BigInteger but actual value in the database was decimal. Thats why java.lang.ArithmeticException: Rounding necessary. The variable types were changed from BigInteger to BigDecimal and the Exception was no more.

I got this exception for during working on the google table visualization. In fact not only on "getColumnLabel", you will get this exception for all the methods of DataTable. In fact the reason behind is this the DataTable is null or created yet. This somewhat resembles to JAVA null poninter exception. And in GWT you will get this exception from the native lavel. To avoid this first initiate your DataTable and then call the functions.

Now a days I am being more involved with my mobile for interacting with the internet cloud. I am using mobile for watching videos, listening to podcasts. Today here I will specially talk about videos on mobile. I am a big fan of youtube. I am using the software from youtube to watch videos. Before this I used to watch youtube on my laptop. most of the time I had to select the video then roam around sometime to get the video buffered and then watch it. Ohhhhh I need to specify my bandwidth is very much limited. But the mobile is nice. It has a tiny(sometimes big !!! today) screen, which really needs pretty small amount of data to run the show. So I need to buffer at the first time only then it just moves on. not very long ago when internet was booming on the mobile world everybody was on "mobile compatible web sites". But now is the era of online multimedia. So I think this is a good time to think about mobile compatible multimedia contents. I have thought few.

The audio volume should not be below the standard, I think the higher is better. Because the audio amplification is limited on mobile devices and in most of the cases there is only one speaker.

very fast scene changes on the video is not good for mobile viewing
If the video contains any textual information it should be enlarged for sufficient time according to its importance and length to let the viewers read.

One single scene throughout the video may sometime cause screensaver the come up and turn off the play. So this should be avoided.

ConcurrentModificationException

I got this exception today during operating on a List. It seems to me a rare exception.

I had to remove few items from a list. I was removing one by one with the List.remove(object). Then got this exception. I was looking for a quick solution. Without being bothered about concurrency. I just made another list of elements which has to be removed from my main list. And finally called the List.removeAll(Collection). It worked nice.

Code is like this.

List myMainList;
iterate over myMainList

if(certain conditions)

elementsToBeReoved.add(theElement);

myMainList.removeAll(elementsToBeRemoved);

Entity comparison

Today I was doing comparison between two JPA entities. I just accessed the the values via getter setters and checking the equality of them. On the debugger I am getting the values equal but the my comparison is returning me false. I was stuck a bit. Then the point became clear. It was a really silly mistake. The member variables in the entity are the wrapper class of the primitive types of JAVA. So direct equality check will compare the whole objects rather than the values. In this case obviously two objects are not same. So to compare first we need to have the primitive values using doubleValue() or intValue() function. Or the wrapper class's compare() function can be used.

I was really confused in this case. Style Sheets is a core part of the GUI components. So it should be related to the GUI. In google visualization model there is data source an the visualizer. First of all you have to put all the data in your data table. then you can use this single data table with all kind of visualizer from google. in special case you have to use data view which similar to the view concept in database. So we were talking about the styling of a table visualization to be more specific styling of a cell of the table. You will get this "how to" in lots of places for javascript. But I was looking for GWT.

Lets go step by step:

You have to do this in data table.

create the data table

"Hello test" and "$100" is the formatted value of the for table. that means your underlying data table will contain "test" but the table will show "Hello test". Same for 100 and $100
It take the last parameter a Properties object, which in fact a JavaScriptObject(JSO). So you cant create it on JAVA. You have to make a JSNI (Javascript Native Interface) function to get the JSO.
Signature of the function is like public native Properties getCellProp();
The JavaScript implementation of this table visualization help me a lot to write the body of this JSNI function. it is like

I was working with PIE chart from the google visualization APIs. You can get all in the Google Visualization API Gallery. Every visualization comes with details. Getting started is as simple as it is. Lets see how to use the in Netbeans.

1. Create a GWT project in Netbeans using the GWT4NB plugin

2. Add the gwt-visualization.jar in your libraries.

3. Go to the Main.gwt.xml and add this line

We all know about JNI. It is a feature of JAVA. With this you communicate with other codes, DLLs written not in JAVA. This is an unique feature of JAVA. Because lots of code has already been written in many other languages before JAVA hit the market. So just no need to rewrite all those in JAVA again. So these are also true for GWT. Tons of Java scripts are already available in the web. Should we rewrite all of them. GWT's answer is no. Use JSNI. Java Script Native Interface. Its simple just like JNI. Declare a native method

Now in the on success method cast your result to Person and get all the features of your Person class in client side. Asynchronous callbacks can be generic. In that case you can provide the Type Person in your Asynchronous Callback. And then you need not to cast.

Hey dont be afraid. It didn't hit the market yet. But it is really not very far from that. Since google is becoming the largest provider of software(!) as a service. So days are not very far from now when instead of using JDK or .NET SDK or any other Software development kit, you will be using GDK (!). The speciality of GDK would be to use the cloud architecture. Like when you use java.util.arraylist.sort(), it runs on your own machine or in your own server. But in GDK it may call an api to sort which will reside anywhere in the Google infrastructure. Array sort may seem pretty ambitious. Because in this case you need to handle a lot of data back and forth. But computationally expensive jobs can be done in this manner. Like data visualizations. Google has released their open visualization API. Of course there will be always flexibility to work on your own hardware. There is already more than 40 API in the google code and lot more are waiting in the lab. Even you can have an IDE to play with this APIs. So days are coming when web based development kits will run the market.

I was using "dd-mon-yyyy hh24:mm" as my date format. Here I have specified mm for two times. That’s why exception occurred. I was expecting minute. Instead of mm I need to use mi. So the correct date format string would be

I was getting this exception in

Resultset.getLong(“column_name”);

Reason behind this is was simple. The data in the database was float and I was trying to convert it to long. This made this exception. Just using getFloat(“column_name”) instead of getLong(“column_name”) solved the problem.

I knew about the robots.txt. Suppose you have a lot of pages in your site. Among them you dont want to expose all of your pages to search engines. To do this for google the way is robots.txt. You should list the URLs in the robots.txt file. Google honors this file ad dont crawl those links.

But in Blogger the scenario is a little bit different. Here you will not maintain this robots.txt file. Rather google will do this for you :D. Dont be happy on this. In fact if google identifies duplicate content on your site, then google does this for its future crawl preferences. And you dont have the authority to modify your blogger's robots.txt. This is a really tricky error of visual studio's express editions.

I was trying to use My SQL with VS web developer express edition. First of all I have tried to connect with this driver. From the original My SQL site. But I didn't get the My SQL connection in the drop down list of visual Database connection manager. Then I tried with another commercial driver. But still same error. Then I found the error is not with the drivers. The problem is in the Express editions. Express edition does not allow any third party plugin to be installed. I was in a real pain this problem for a last 3 hours. At last I got the solution. There is a function named VerifyRenderingInServerForm(Control control) which in fact verifies all the controls. I have just override the function to not to verify. The override function looks like below

I was using mysql .net connect 6.0.3. and visual web developer 2008. Then I have added the all the DLLs ("MySql.Data.CF.dll" "MySql.Data.dll" "MySql.Data.Entity.dll" "MySql.Web.dll" ) from the add references module. I found pattern matching in JAVA very simple and easy. Till now I just know two class, One is Pattern and the other is Matcher. With this two class I am working fine. and the code is also very simple. One thing to remember none of the two class cant be initiated with the new operator.

Code is something like this.

String regx = "my reg X";

String input = "here put your input string";

Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile(regx);

Matcher matcher = pattern.matcher(input);

Now you have got your parsing engine ready. you have to just search now.

How to get the last date of a month in oracle

In one of my applications, I was reporting for exactly for month. So I took the date time parameter as month-year such as mar-2009. And then with this parameter I have searched in my database. But for the integration porpuse with the ERP system I need to send the month in first date - last date format. I really was in trouble. But oracle saved me

select last_day (to_date('12-09-2009', 'dd-mm-yyyy')) from dual

with this query you can get the last date of a month with any date of the month. You can apply this function on any date type field. And dont worry about the first date just put 01-month-year.
